Leave a messageGreat wall motor’s army of Tank SUVs continues to expand, with another model revealed at this week’s Shanghai motor show.
The plug-in hybrid tank 400 wears similar angular styling to the previously revealed Tank 700, but is closer to the tank 300 in size – which may make an Australian launch a non-starter.
“We’ve already confirmed Tank 300 and Tank 500 is firming as the second Tank model for Australia,” said a spokesperson for GWM Haval Australia.
Total system outputs are reportedly 300kW of power and 750Nm of torque.

The aggressive styling includes flared wheel arches with exposed bolts, for a rugged look. There also appears to be plenty of ground clearance, though no official figure is available yet.
As with other Tank models, the spare wheel is mounted externally on the tailgate.
Inside, there’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 16.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a head-up display.
Though it has a large touchscreen, GWM hasn’t abandoned physical switchgear entirely. There’s a row of it on the centre stack, including physical climate controls, plus additional buttons on the centre console.
Sitting ahead of the unusually shaped gear shifter are dual charging pads, a common design element in many modern Chinese cars.
The Tank 400 was first revealed in concept form in 2021, and the production version looks essentially unchanged.
Every Tank concept has subsequently been revealed in production guise apart from the flagship 800, a turbocharged V6-powered luxury SUV.
Great Wall Motors’ Tank brand has revealed another rugged, adventurously-styled off-roader.
The Tank 400 is a concept sized similarly to the production Tank 500, but styled in the same aggressive manner as the Tank 700 concept revealed at the 2021 Shanghai motor show.
The company has yet to confirm technical specifications for the Tank 400, though it says it’s a “medium-to-large” SUV like the Tank 500 albeit with less of a luxury focus.
The Tank 500 measures 5070mm long, 1934mm wide and 1905mm tall on a 2850mm wheelbase, which makes it similar in size to the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series.
Autohome reports the Tank 400 concept rides the same wheelbase as the 500.
Unlike a LandCruiser, the concept features angular styling with dramatic touches like flared wheel arches, an exposed spare wheel and BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres.
It reportedly has off-road ability to match its looks, with locking front and rear differentials and body-on-frame construction.
It’s mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission developed in-house.
In contrast, the Tank 300’s turbo four-cylinder produces 167kW of power and 387Nm of torque.
It’s mated to a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission, with the Tank 300 boasting a 0-100km/h time of 9.5 seconds.
The Tank name first appeared on the Wey Tank 300, before it was rolled out into its own brand.
The Tank 500 is the next model slated for launch, while the company has also previewed a flagship 800 plus the aforementioned 700.
